Which wall should be your accent wall?

The best way to answer this question is to think about the function you intend for your wall. When an accent wall becomes the focal point of the whole space, it usually serves one of these three purposes:

  • enhance an architectural feature in a room
  • define a space for a function, for example, the art corner in the second picture
  • give life to a plain wall (the most common one!)

Are accent walls still in style?

Accent walls have always been around. I remember my grandmother’s red wall in her dining room -and also remember thinking “who paints a whole wall red?!”… now I’d love to paint my TV wall green!

Like everything in the design world, they have changed over time, but for sure accent walls are here to stay. Check out some of the new trending colors and styles for accent wall designs.

Painted Walls

You can try a DIY geometric area for a fun focal point. Going for a more mature look? Pick a dark color for a wall and change the whole room feel! Paint is always one of the most affordable options for a room makeover.

Wallpaper and Decals

This is one of the top options if you want to bring personality into a room. Using a peel-and-stick wallpaper or decals often turns out to be easier than painting and even becomes an option for renters!

Paneling, Shiplap, and Board & Batten

These are all wood-textured related walls. Even a simple white shiplap wall can do the trick to fill up an empty plain wall, adding interest to the room without investing in a bold color.

If you are interested in adding some color, dark green and blue are the winners these days. Notice how the dark color gives this entryway an inviting and cozy feel, in addition to defining the space. Feel free to check out here this entryway makeover.

Brick, Concrete, and Plaster

You can bring texture to your wall with these irregular finishes. Plaster, being the smoothest option, would fit best if you are going for a subtle look.

If you are not ready to modify your walls, you can try these removable wallpaper concrete and plaster options:

Gallery Walls

This is one of the less-committed ways to create an accent wall. No plaster, wood construction, paint, or even wallpaper are involved here, you only need just a couple of nails!

  1. Hello,
I love your entrance way makeover. I was wondering how tall your ceilings are and how high, from the floor, did you do your board and batten?

    Thank you,

    Annie

    • Thanks, Annie! This is a design I made using Photoshop (a 3D rendering), so I can’t tell you for sure those measurements. I’m glad you like it!
